This is an easy cake to bake. I personally dislike the banana cakes sold in the supermarket as they have very strong artificial banana essence. I omitted the banana essence in this recipe. This recipe is adapted from Wee Eng Hwa’s Cooking for the President.

Fluffy Butter Cake
Butter cake has always been my mum’s favourite. Just a few days ago, she asked me to bake this cake for her birthday. However, her birthday is in November. I decide to give her a surprise by baking one now. Source: Wendyinkk – Mrs NgSK Butter Cake. Here is the recipe. Continue reading
Kueh Bahulu – Part II
I wanted to bake kueh bahulu using my mother-in-law’s antique mould but she had forgotten the recipe. Her friend gave her a recipe which she did not think as authentic. She vaguely had some idea about the recipe which was taught by her Nyonya neighbour some 50 years ago. So I did a little research and found this recipe from Wee Eng Hwa’s Cooking for the President which my MIL approved. Adapted from Wee Eng Hwa’s cookbook.
Here is the recipe.
Kueh Bahulu (Part I)
My mother-in-law has this antique kueh Boluh mould that is made of brass copper. It has a history of about 50 years. In olden times, most household did not have ovens at home. They used charcoal stove to bake the bottom and the top cover was filled with hot charcoal to bake the top. How innovative. I saw a picture of similar mold in Wee Eng Hwa: Cooking for the President. I decided to try her recipe.
Racines Cake (Flourless Chocolate Cake)
I am a visual person. Any recipe with a mouth-watering picture will definitely captivate me and push me bake it. David Lebovitz has a very interesting tale to tell about this chocolate cake. He was inspired by a restaurant in Paris called Racines and that’s where the cake got its name. This recipe is adapted from David Lebovitz.
Molten Lava Cake
This is one of my favourite restaurant desserts. I love the liquid chocolate that is flowing out of the cake. To top up with a scope of ice cream is simply heavenly. Adapted from Caroline Bretherton.

Chwee Kueh (Steamed Water Rice Cakes)
Chwee kueh is my favourite breakfast food. It costs $1.20 for 4. Why do I need to make these cakes which are cheap and easily available? My husband finds the oil in the toppings is bad for his throat. So I have to use olive oil to make this breakfast snack. This is adapted from “Cooking for the President” by Wee Eng Hwa”.
Steamed Pumpkin Cake
This recipe does not involve any oven baking. It is only steaming. It’s one of my favourite snack. Adapted from soshiok.com – Madam Tan Cheh Keow’s recipe.
